As an amateur rider, why do I choose Synovium Supplements?
By Samantha Osborne
When working in a local feed merchants and tack shop as a student, I received training from a range of established and well recognised equestrian supplement brands. I learned about the importance of quality and quantity of pure ingredients, as well as which ingredients to opt for in order to achieve maximum results. Inlight of this insight, I study packaging labels, engage with website product reviews, read online product descriptions and seek veterinary advice before committing to buying supplements for my horses. Upon discovering Synovium Supplements in 2021, I was impressed by the extent of scientific research conducted on every product that they market. The company provides advice from a team of vets who are clearly passionate about promoting horse health and in turn horse welfare. I compete with my horses on a regular basis and so it was crucial that I selected FEI legal supplements; Synovium takes pride in clean sport rules and ensures all products are suitable for the performance horse. Furthermore, sustainability and being conscious of the environment are factors which I consider when buying items. Synovium is a UK business and so I feel like this limits product transportation, which is a more environmentally friendly choice. The robust plastic tubs can be recycled or reused for other jobs too. When exploring profiles of riders who use and recommend Synovium, it is clear to see that Synovium are trusted by professional riders yet are affordable for amateur riders. I am proud to be a Synovium Brand Ambassador! To access my discount code, please use voucher SAMANTHA10 at the checkout for a 10% discount.
I am an amateur home-produced rider from North Yorkshire. My horses are housed in DIY livery and are solely cared for and funded by me. Due to having very limited funding for an increasingly costly hobby and lifestyle, I have to budget carefully to provide top quality nutrition and health care for my horses, especially those that I expect to perform to their optimum level at shows. I have never had money to buy expensive ready made horses with clean vet records and so I rely on effective supplements and topical treatments to nurture my horses. I have often rehomed and retrained racehorses for the show ring and in more recent years, I have loaned horses that require specific management to keep sound following injuries in their younger years. Synovium Supplements help me to get winning results with horses that need an extra bit of TLC. The supplement range allows them to win. Winning accrues prize money. Prize money pays towards supplements…
Star of Synovium 2022 winner, Kornetto, was fed on Agility to support his joints and muscle tissue growth and repair. He changed shape significantly between March and August when I worked with him at home to prepare him for the start of his British Dressage career. A 1kg tub costs £68 and lasts roughly 1 month, which is less than £2 a day; (less than my daily chocolate allowance!) I liked the concept of this product because it contains collagen - something we often see promoted in high end beauty products. The Bioactive Collagen Peptides are highly absorbable for rapid results. Kornetto could be fussy with feed but he always ate the neutral tasting powder. I continued to feed this to my showjumper, Bertie, who suffered trauma to his collateral ligament as a 6 year old. With the support of remedial shoeing, a sympathetic exercise programme and a reputable supplements to aid repair, Bertie is fit to compete at British Showjumping and his hugely improved record speaks volumes for how effective Agility is. Since using Agility, Bertie has gained 4 wins at British Showjumping and picked up a range of second round qualifications. He has gained double clears at Discovery, 1m Open and 1m10 too. I can deduce that he has the confidence to jump cleanly and more balanced as a result of Agility as his double record strike rate has significantly increased over the last 6 months. His winning performances are also recorded on his British Dressage record with wins at Intro, Prelim and Novice level in his first affiliated season. He feels much more supple and connected since I introduced Agility into his feeding regime, and consequently our medium work scores have been great.
Kornetto lacked inexperience and was very green with outings. He had a lot of presence and hot blood so could be sharp, spooky and anxious at times. I agreed to trial and review some instant syringes of calmer (Calmingard) which are £7 per syringe, or can be purchased as a box of 5. The easy to use syringe was advertised to reduce stress in horses. The gel is made from natural ingredients and helps horses to concentrate rather than providing a sedative-like effect. I administered the gel when the horse was at ease in his stable. An hour later, I tacked up and went into the arena. The gelding would often note if a jump wing in a corner of the school had been moved a few inches and so to really put the calmer to the test, I had a good reshuffle of the obstacles in the school. I tended to ride around the outside of the arena with a lot of inside leg to try and prevent a sudden spook; however, after using this calmer, he didn’t make a fuss about any of the scary invisible arena monsters! I come from a showing background and know that many show riders choose to use calmers when their horses are expected to be calm in a buzzy environment. I have tried a wide range of calmers across my years in the show ring but didn’t have any success with them. I would certainly recommend this to the showing world as a calmer that works.
Bertie, as previously mentioned, has signs of wear and tear. Now eleven years old, I am aware of the onset of arthritic changes and secondary aches and pains from primary past injuries. Due to landing considerately on his right fore, he can get a little sore in his left shoulder. The diagonally paired hind limb can also niggle him occasionally, with mild stifle discomfort. He has also previously had his sacroiliac area medicated. To keep him comfortable, he has physiotherapy every 8 weeks and is fed on Biobute. Pine Vet Physiotherapy provides expert treatment. Megan, who founded the business, endorses Synovium Supplements - so much so that she markets and distributes as she travels to treat horses. After careful assessments and discussion, I decided to invest in some topical treatments too. I use Arnica Hydrogel (RRP £14.99) on his back - particularly across the lumbar region. I use this before and after exercise. I opted for this product because it contains green tea, which is something I personally have used. Green tea has antibacterial and antioxidant properties. The clear gel is straightforward to apply and doesn’t leave a nasty residue, nor does it attract dirt. I also apply the Ginger and MSM Liniment to his stifles and on his forelimbs (knee downwards). This liquid reduces inflammation and enhances circulation. When stabling for longer periods, such as at a championship show, I keep a bottle of this in my lorry and apply it to all of Bertie’s legs to sooth them and prevent them from swelling up.
In summer 2022, we were blessed with some intense heat. Bertie doesn’t cope well with hot weather. He lets you know if you over rug him in winter, even when fully clipped, and he can be lethargic in his work in hotter months. After a few weeks of unusually hot temperatures, Synovium Supplements recommended that I give Bertie their Electrolytes Q. The tubs contain measuring scoops and clear dosage guidance on the labelling, which makes every supplement easy to use. My favourite thing about this product has to be the smell; it is delicious! It reassures me that if Bertie has worked hard at a show or sweated a lot in a training session, I know that his levels of electrolytes will be restored with the support of Electrolytes Q. A 2.5kg tub lasts for around 2 months, which is cost effective.
I vaccinate my competition horses, including for EHV, and I am mindful of keeping them warm and away from other horses at shows. Despite all efforts, horses can still catch viruses and become ill. More recently, Bertie presented symptoms of coughing, lethargy and raspy breathing. Although his temperature remained normal and he didn’t lose condition throughout the weeks over Christmas when his health was compromised, his cough has been persistent. With important show dates looming next month, I have turned to the support of the Synovium team once again to try to speed up his recovery. Vicky kindly gifted some Airplus, which is one of Synovium’s best selling products. Much to Bertie’s disgust, I have to syringe this syrup-like formula into him as he is reluctant to eat it in his food. The thick liquid contains: aniseed, eucalyptus oil, rosemary, potassium iodide and thyme. Although my vet believes that Bertie is suffering from a seasonal virus, should with further investigation I learn that he may have developed an allergy which has created respiratory difficulties, I feel confident from the overwhelmingly positive reviews about Airplus Liquid that his irritations will be soothed so that he can return to ridden work. A full product review will feature on my Instagram page by the end of February 2023 - @samanthaosbornequestrian When he no longer presents these symptoms, I intend to use Red and Gold to boost his energy levels in time for British Novice Second Rounds in spring time.
